Hey just stumbled on this website and was wanting to discuss some things. I have been bodybuilding strictly for the past 3 years. I am 21, 5 8″ and 205lbs with about 13-15% body fat. I work as a paramedic/ firefighter, and have a pretty well rounded knowledge of medicine and sports nutrition. One topic I have been wanting to learn more about is what is the ideal shake to drink upon waking in the morning. I understand that you have to get some fast acting carbs along with protein to stop catabolism from sleeing all night. I have heard some people suggest honey with the protein, I have heard others say fruit. I am just kinda lost. I take maltodextrin post workout with protein, should I take the same thing in the morning just not as much, maybe half? Should I add the honey to my post workout shake, or should I forget the honey. Sorry if this sounds kind of scattered but I am just not sure of the combination. Any help or input would be much appreciated, thanks guys.

Are you restricting yourself to a protein shake in the morning for any reason. I take a shake in the morning for breakfast because I have little time before work.

There are several recipes for good protein shakes. Protein is really important in the morning, since you have been sleeping and not eating for about 8 hours.

what kind of protein do you have? If you have chocolate whey try mixing it with 1/2 -3/4 cups oats 12-16 oz. milk. You can also add peanut butter to it to get some extra fat content.

Adding a banana to your shake is also a good ideas depending on what you like.

I am not sure what your goals are, but some good carb choices in the morning are oats, wheat toast, healthy grain cereal, maybe some healthy bagels or waffles too.

I think complex carbs are more important in the morning than fast acting ones because you need to the fuel for your body for the rest of the day.

Got something to say?
